Gold coin “Hum” breaks Guinness World Record for the smallest coin in the World

The Croatian Mint has minted the world’s smallest gold coin, with a diameter of just 1.99 millimeters and a weight of 0.05 grams. The coin is symbolically dedicated to the Istrian town of Hum, known as the smallest town in the world.

Today, Victor Fenes, a representative and official adjudicator of the Guinness World Records, presented Robert Blaić, the director of the Croatian Mint, with a “GUINNESS WORLD RECORD” certificate confirming that the “Hum” gold coin is the smallest coin in the world.

This miniature coin, issued by the Croatian National Bank in December 2022, is so tiny that it was sold with a magnifying glass. With a diameter of just 1.99 millimeters and a weight of 0.05 grams, the gold coin featuring the city of Hum was created as a final memento of the kuna before Croatia entered the Eurozone. For the Croatian Mint, known for its innovation, quality, and dedication to preserving cultural heritage through numismatic products, the “Hum” gold coin is a special project that gains even more significance now that Guinness has declared it the smallest coin in the world.

Founded in 1955, Guinness World Records is the leading global authority on record-breaking achievements. Based in London, Guinness World Records not only documents records but also inspires people worldwide to push the boundaries of what is possible. Each year, millions of people around the world eagerly await the new edition of their famous record book, which now features the smallest coin in the world as a new Croatian record holder.

The smallest gold coin in the world was sold in a gold numismatic set with a one ounce gold coin featuring the Višnjan Observatory, which ranks third in the world for the number of published assistances in determining the trajectories of small celestial bodies. The numismatic set was issued in a series of only 199 pieces. These were the last gold coins with a kuna denomination. The face value of the Hum gold coin is one kuna, and of the one ounce Višnjan coin is 1000 kuna.

The process of producing the smallest coin in the world was challenging and required the adaptation of all production steps. In collaboration with sculptor Ana Divković, a detailed depiction of the city of Hum was developed for the coin, while the latest technology and tools achieved exceptional precision and quality. Design Bureau Izvorka Jurić took care of the packaging in which the coin comes, a box that unfolds like a map leading to the Hum gold coin and the Višnjan Observatory, providing an experience of discovering great value.

The entry of the unique Croatian Mint coin into the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS book was marked today with a ceremonial presentation of this achievement at the Croatian Mint premises.
