The Croatian National Bank has issued a commemorative 2-euro coin as part of the series “Croatian Cities”, portraying the Pula Arena – a prominent monument of ancient architecture in the city of Pula. The Arena holds great historical and cultural significance for the Republic of Croatia and the world. The Arena’s image was also one of the principal motifs on the reverse of the former 10 kuna banknote.

The author of the design for the national side of the coin is Duje Botteri. The coin packaged in a coincard and minted in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, is available in a limited series of 5,000 pieces.

Description of the national side of the commemorative coin:
The national side of the commemorative coin features the main motif of the Pula Arena (amphitheatre), one of the most prominent ancient monuments in the Republic of Croatia, from the perspective of the view from the Adriatic Sea presented symbolically below the main motif, which also highlights the Mediterranean character of the Republic of Croatia. To the right of the main motif is the depiction of the church of St. Anthony built in the 1930s, which is part of a panoramic view of the city of Pula.

The coin’s national side outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

The edge lettering of the coin features the text “O LIJEPA O DRAGA O SLATKA SLOBODO” (Oh beautiful, oh dear, oh sweet freedom) from the Hymn to Freedom, which is an integral part of the pastoral play “Dubravka” by the 17th century Croatian writer Ivan Gundulić.

Technical specification:
The commemorative 2-euro coin is minted according to the technical specifications for the 2-euro circulation coin in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) No 729/2014 of 24 June 2014 on denominations and technical specifications of euro coins intended for circulation.
