Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić was born 150 years ago

On April 18th this year, we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. On this occasion, as part of a series honouring Croatian literary giants, the Croatian Mint introduces the first edition of the “Croatian Literature” series – collector gold and silver coins “150th Anniversary of the Birth of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić”. This is yet another testament to the rich legacy of children’s literature in this region, as well as beyond the borders of our country.

Gifted in many ways, especially in the field of foreign languages, she began writing poetry, essays, and journals at a very young age. She captured the attention of the literary audience in 1913 with the novel “Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića” (The Wonderful Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice), while her most famous work, the collection of folk tales “Priče iz davnine” (Tales of Long Ago), was published in 1916.

Her fairy tales, inspired by Slavic mythology and featuring characters like Kosjenka, Regoč, Maliki Tintilinić, and many others, convey moral messages and life truths. Their universality has been recognized worldwide, with English magazines dubbing Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić as the Croatian Andersen, while her stories are described as expressions of an ethical genius that captivates both older and younger readers.

In accordance with commemorating this significant anniversary, the Croatian Mint has minted a limited series of 150 pieces of one-ounce gold coins (31.103 grams) and 1,500 pieces of one-ounce silver coins (31.103 grams).

Each buyer will receive their collector coin in a navy blue box with a special wrapper highlighting the features of the coin itself.

The “150th Anniversary of the Birth of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić” edition will be available for order starting from April 22nd:
