New collector piece is dedicated to the island of Susak

Honoring local heritage, the Croatian Mint continues the series of collector coins “Croatian Heritage” with a new issue of gold and silver collector coins. This new issue is dedicated to the small and mystical island of Susak.

Located in the northern Adriatic sea, Susak is known for its unique geological structure, shallow sandy bays and rich cultural heritage. This small island is most recognizable for its unique traditional costume, which is as vivid as it is short! Today, it is considered the shortest traditional costume in Europe, and probably in the world. Young women on Susak wear short, colourful skirts with pink or orange woollen socks, making this costume extremely striking.

The vivid colours of the traditional costume have been transferred also to the coins. The one-ounce (31.103 grams) gold coin and the two-ounce (62.207 grams) silver coin are available in 200 and 400 pieces respectively, with coloured details.

The obverse of the coin features a cartographic representation of the island of Susak, Cape Darto with a chapel, while the reverse of the coin showcases the ceremonial traditional costume of Susak. These coins are not just collector’s items but also a reflection of Croatia’s rich cultural heritage.

The special symbolism of this issue is further emphasized by the celebration of Emigrant Day, which takes place on the last weekend of July on the island of Susak. This year, on July 28, 2024, the Croatian Mint will participate in the event, contributing to the festivities by presenting its new coins.

For all interested parties, the coins come in elegant dark blue gift boxes with a certificate signed by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank and features on the accompanying sleeve.

The issue “The Island of Susak” will be shipped starting from August 19th according to the order sequence.
