The Croatian National Bank in collaboration with the Croatian Mint has issued the silver collector coin “Marija Jurić Zagorka”. This one-ounce (31.103 grams) silver coin, in the 4 euro denomination, is issued in a series of 1,000 pieces. The coin comes in a box with a certificate signed by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank and represents an ideal gift for special occasions.

Marija Jurić Zagorka was not “just” a writer. She was a revolutionary of pen and spirit: the first modern political reporter in Croatia, a tireless advocate for women’s and civil rights, the founder of the first women’s magazines, and a pioneer in researching women’s history in Croatia. Her literary and social legacy remains indelible in the collective memory – not only as cultural heritage but also as a cornerstone of the modern fight for equality.

The author of the coin’s artistic design dedicated to Marija Jurić Zagorka is artist Jelena Mavrić Varga, who has faithfully conveyed the strength and determination of this remarkable woman through the portrait on the obverse. Marija Jurić Zagorka’s name is written in script, symbolically emphasizing her literary work, while the reverse of the coin features the image of Lotrščak Tower, a symbol of the city of Zagreb and a recurring setting in many of Zagorka’s novels.
