Continuing the “Croatian Literature” series, the Croatian National Bank, in collaboration with the Croatian Mint, has issued a one-ounce (31.103 grams) silver collector coin in the 4 euro denomination, featuring the image of Marija Jurić Zagorka. The “Marija Jurić Zagorka” silver collector coin is issued in a limited series of only 1,000 pieces and comes in a presentation box with a certificate signed by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank.

Marija Jurić Zagorka was not “just” a writer. She was a revolutionary of pen and spirit: the first modern political reporter in Croatia, a tireless advocate for women’s and civil rights, the founder of the first women’s magazines, and a pioneer in researching women’s history in Croatia. Her literary and social legacy remains indelible in the collective memory – not only as cultural heritage but also as a cornerstone of the modern fight for equality.

The author of the coin’s artistic design dedicated to Marija Jurić Zagorka is artist Jelena Mavrić Varga, who has faithfully conveyed the strength and determination of this remarkable woman through the portrait on the obverse. Marija Jurić Zagorka’s name is written in script, symbolically emphasizing her literary work, while the reverse of the coin features the image of Lotrščak Tower, a symbol of the city of Zagreb and a recurring setting in many of Zagorka’s novels.
