August Šenoa on Coins Preserving Literary Heritage

In collaboration with the Croatian Mint, the Croatian National Bank is presenting a new collector coin issue dedicated to August Šenoa as part of the “Croatian Literature” series.

August Šenoa is one of those names that extends far beyond the boundaries of literature. As an author who shaped the cultural and social life of the latter half of the 19th century, he left a profound mark not only on Croatian literature, but also on the identity of Zagreb and the era in which he lived. Widely regarded as the founder of modern Croatian literature, his most celebrated works continue to hold an important place in the country’s cultural heritage.

What makes Šenoa’s life particularly remarkable is that he became one of the most influential voices of Croatian culture despite growing up in a German-speaking household. He first encountered the Croatian language as a boy in Zagreb’s Ribnjak Park, a beginning that would set him on a path towards becoming both a distinguished writer and a public figure of his time — a city senator by day, and by night, an author whose works continue to resonate today.

While working as a city clerk and delving into archival records, he came across documents from Gradec and Kaptol that revealed a compelling story — a conflict between the citizens and the powerful Stjepko Gregorijanec, lord of Medvedgrad. From these authentic fragments of the past emerged the foundation for what would become “The Goldsmith’s Treasure”, the first modern Croatian historical novel.

Šenoa was far more than a writer — he was also a journalist, translator, playwright, theatre critic, and editor of the journal “Vienac”, as well as a passionate numismatist. In his own writings, he mentions his coin collection, adding a meaningful connection between his legacy and this very issue.

The coins are minted in Brilliant Uncirculated quality and limited series. The one ounce gold coin is issued in just 50 pieces, while the 1/8 ounce gold coin is available in 150 pieces. The one ounce silver coin is issued in a series of 1,000 pieces.

This issue presents not only the likeness of a writer, but also the story of a time in which his work helped shape the identity of the Croatian people. Šenoa championed the language we speak today, and Croatia preserves, with gratitude, the memory of both the man and his literary legacy.

The “August Šenoa” collector coins will be available for purchase via the Croatian Mint’s online shop with delivery taking place during May.
