The Croatian National Bank, in collaboration with the Croatian Mint, has issued the “200th Anniversary of the Samobor Carnival” silver coin, weighing one ounce (31.103 grams). With a nominal value of 4 euros, the coin is minted in silver of 999.9/1000 fineness. It is issued in a limited series of 1,500 pieces and is presented in a case accompanied by a certificate signed by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank.

This new issue is dedicated to the Samobor Carnival, one of the oldest and most recognisable carnival traditions in Croatia, protected as intangible cultural heritage. For more than two centuries, the carnival has celebrated satire, free expression and shared joy, and through humour, masks and open social commentary it has become an integral part of the identity of the town of Samobor.

The artistic design is by Karlo Gross, who has featured Magpie, the most iconic figure of the Samobor Carnival and a distinctive voice of the people, on the obverse of the coin, while the reverse depicts other characters associated with the rich carnival tradition.
